Accuracy and transparency

Why United Calculator

Every page follows the same content standard: formula derivation, a worked example with real numbers, applicable laws or professional guidance, 6 plain-language FAQs, and links to 8 related tools.

Verified formulas

Each formula engine is based on published standards — TILA for loan calculations, METS tables for energy expenditure, ASTM standards for materials, and equivalents across 16 subject areas. The formula is shown in a code block on every result card so you can verify the calculation independently.

Professional context, not professional advice

Finance and health calculators cover applicable legislation (CFPB, NHS, OSHA) and reference professional thresholds (e.g. debt-to-income ratios accepted by lenders, WHO BMI categories). Every page includes a disclaimer — these tools are planning aids. Consequential decisions should be reviewed with a qualified professional.

No account, no tracking, no fee

Calculations run entirely in your browser. No data leaves your device. There are no login walls, no usage limits, no subscription tiers, and no premium paywalls. The only data stored is nothing — no cookies are set beyond what your browser requires to render the page.

Transparent methodology

Smart defaults come from published benchmarks — median UK household income from ONS, US average mortgage rate from Freddie Mac weekly surveys, average commute distances from the US Census ACS. Defaults are documented in the article body on each calculator page.

Simple by design

How United Calculator works

Three steps from question to answer — no account, no subscription, no ads cluttering the result.

Search or browse

Type a topic into the search box or click a category. Each category is a mini-library of 125 calculator pages targeting specific questions — loan payments, BMI, tile counts, carbon footprint, and more.

Enter your values

Smart defaults are pre-filled so you get an immediate example result. Replace any field with your own data. Click the ? icon on any field for a plain-language explanation of what that input means.

Burn Rate Calculator

Burn Rate Calculator: calculate burn rate for your business. Formula, benchmarks, and practical tips included.

The Startup Runway Calculator projects how many months of cash remain based on your current bank balance, monthly revenue, monthly expenses, and expected revenue growth rate. It models month-by-month cash balance and revenue, identifies the break-even month, and signals critical thresholds (under 6 months runway is considered a fundraising emergency). Use for individual business profitability analysis, or to model how DCA-style monthly investments can supplement your runway.

Y Combinator's "default alive" rule — coined by Paul Graham — states that a startup is default alive if it can reach profitability before it runs out of cash, given its current trajectory. The Sequoia "Good Times Require Tight Spending" memo (2022) advised portfolio companies to target 24+ months of runway. Series A funding typically requires 18+ months of remaining runway to negotiate from a position of strength (Bessemer Venture Partners guidance). A burn multiple below 1.5× — meaning you spend no more than £1.50 for every £1.00 of new ARR generated — is considered an efficient growth rate.

  1. Enter Cash in bank — total liquid funds across all accounts today.
  2. Set Monthly revenue — your current MRR or last month's revenue.
  3. Set Monthly expenses — total outgoings including payroll, infrastructure, and overheads.
  4. Enter your expected Monthly revenue growth rate % — be conservative; 10–15% MoM is very strong growth for early-stage SaaS.
  5. Optionally add a Planned funding injection and its expected arrival month to model a fundraise scenario.

Startup runway calculation

Monthly burn = Expenses − Revenue (net cash consumed each month). Runway = Cash ÷ Monthly burn (simple, no-growth estimate).

The calculator uses a dynamic simulation: each month, revenue grows by the set % rate; when revenue exceeds expenses, burn becomes negative (the company is profitable). Break-even month is when revenue ≥ expenses.

Worked example: £500,000 cash, £20,000 MRR, £80,000 expenses, 10% monthly growth. Month 1 burn = £60,000; cash = £440,000. Month 2 rev = £22,000; burn = £58,000; cash = £382,000. By Month 18, revenue ≈ £111,000 > £80,000 expenses — break-even reached. Total runway ≈ 20 months before reaching cash-flow positive. Without growth, runway = £500k ÷ £60k = 8.3 months.

Interpreting your runway

Months of runway and break-even projection

The runway gauge uses a traffic light system: red (under 6 months) means you should be in active fundraising conversations immediately — the average Series A process takes 3–6 months. Amber (6–12 months) means you should begin conversations and have a clear plan. Green (12+ months) provides the negotiating position to raise on your terms. At 18+ months, you are in the strongest possible position for a fundraise.

The break-even month is equally important — it tells you when the business becomes self-sustaining. If break-even is before you run out of money, the business is "default alive." If break-even is after runway runs out, you will need external funding to survive. The chart shows how cash balance and revenue evolve together, making the cross-over point visually clear.

Common mistakes to avoid

Financial projections are inherently uncertain and actual results may differ materially from calculator outputs. This tool is for planning purposes only and does not constitute financial, investment, or legal advice. Before making significant business decisions based on runway projections, consult a qualified accountant or financial adviser. FCA-regulated financial promotion rules apply to fundraising materials — always seek legal advice before issuing investment documents.
