Worked example: 3,500 kWh electricity at 0.207 kgCO₂e/kWh (724 kgCO₂e) + 15,000 kWh gas (2,745 kgCO₂e) + 10,000 km car at 0.170 (1,700 kgCO₂e) + 2 long-haul return flights (20,000 km × 0.195 = 3,900 kgCO₂e) = approximately 9.1 tCO₂e before diet.
A useful comparison keeps the same units, geographic boundary, and time period on both sides.
