A carbon footprint calculator estimates the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by an individual's or household's activities, expressed in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) per year. It typically covers the major emission sources: home energy (heating fuel, electricity from the grid), ground transport (private car, train, bus), air travel, diet (especially meat and dairy consumption), and consumer goods and services. The result allows individuals to identify their highest-impact behaviours and prioritise the most effective emissions reductions. Global average per-capita emissions are approximately 4.7 tCO₂e per year (World Bank, 2022), but this masks large variation: high-income countries average 10–14 tCO₂e, lower-income countries 1–3 tCO₂e. The IPCC estimates that the global average per-capita footprint needs to fall to approximately 2–3 tCO₂e per year by 2050 to meet the Paris Agreement 1.5°C target — a 50–80% reduction from current high-income country levels.

Per-capita carbon footprints by income group (consumption-based, World Bank 2022): high income (USA, Australia, Canada, EU) — 10–20 tCO₂e; upper-middle income — 5–10 tCO₂e; lower-middle income — 2–5 tCO₂e; low income — under 2 tCO₂e. Paris-compatible target by 2050: 2–3 tCO₂e per person globally. Most impactful individual actions: switching heating to a heat pump (saves 2–3 tCO₂e/year vs gas boiler), going car-free or switching to EV (1–2 tCO₂e/year), taking one fewer long-haul flight (0.5–3 tCO₂e per return trip), and adopting a largely plant-based diet (0.5–1.5 tCO₂e/year).
Emission factors used in carbon footprint calculators vary by country and are updated annually by national environment agencies. The Paris Agreement (2015) commits signatory nations to limiting global warming to 1.5–2°C above pre-industrial levels. Corporate carbon reporting requirements (scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions) are governed by national legislation and international frameworks (GHG Protocol). Carbon offsetting projects must meet recognised certification standards (Gold Standard, Verra VCS) to be considered credible.
