CEFR Level Calculator: calculate cefr level for students and teachers. Clear steps and worked examples.
Language proficiency calculators help learners, educators, and employers map test scores to internationally recognised frameworks. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) defines six levels from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery) and is the lingua franca of language assessment, used by universities, employers, and immigration authorities worldwide. IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) are the two dominant English proficiency tests, each accepted by thousands of institutions globally. IELTS uses a band score from 1.0–9.0 in 0.5-band increments; TOEFL iBT uses a scale from 0–120. Both correlate closely with CEFR levels but use different test formats and are preferred in different regions (IELTS in the UK, Australia, Canada; TOEFL in the US).
Vocabulary size calculators estimate the number of word families known from test performance, a key predictor of reading and listening comprehension — research shows 98% text coverage (knowing 98% of words encountered) requires approximately 8,000–9,000 word families in English.
IELTS overall band = (L + R + W + S) ÷ 4, rounded to nearest 0.5
CEFR ↔ IELTS: A1 = 1.0–2.0; A2 = 2.5–3.0; B1 = 3.5–4.0; B2 = 4.5–5.5; C1 = 6.0–7.0; C2 = 7.5–9.0
CEFR ↔ TOEFL iBT: A2 = 0–31; B1 = 32–57; B2 = 58–94; C1 = 95–110; C2 = 111–120
CEFR ↔ Cambridge: C2 Proficiency (CPE) = C2; C1 Advanced (CAE) = C1; B2 First (FCE) = B2; B1 Preliminary (PET) = B1; A2 Key (KET) = A2
Guiding hours to reach each CEFR level from zero (European learner of English): A1 = 100 h; A2 = 200 h total; B1 = 400 h total; B2 = 600 h total; C1 = 900 h total; C2 = 1,200 h total.
UK university entry requirements: most undergraduate programmes require IELTS 6.0–6.5; Russell Group universities and medicine/law typically require IELTS 6.5–7.0; some programmes require 7.5. UK Skilled Worker visa: IELTS 4.0 minimum; NHS clinical roles: IELTS 7.0–7.5 (OET equivalent also accepted). US university entry: TOEFL iBT 80–100 for most programmes; Ivy League typically requires 100+. Australian visa subclass 190/491: IELTS 6.0 minimum for most states; 7.0+ for some healthcare occupations. Canadian Express Entry (FSW): IELTS 6.0 each band for 9 points; 7.0+ for maximum immigration points. CEFR C1 is typically required for university-level academic work in a non-native language.
Language proficiency score requirements for visas are set by government authorities (UK Home Office, IRCC Canada, etc.) and change periodically — always verify current requirements on the official government website before submitting an application. University language requirements are set by individual institutions and faculties. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge Assessment English; TOEFL is administered by ETS. Score reporting, validity, and official transcripts must be obtained directly from the testing provider. This calculator's conversions are based on published concordance tables and are indicative only.
