A corrosion rate below 1 mpy (0.025 mm/year) is classed as excellent — essentially negligible penetration for typical design lives. Rates of 1–5 mpy are acceptable for most structural applications; 5–50 mpy is marginal and usually triggers a coating or inhibitor intervention; above 50 mpy the metal will be consumed rapidly and material selection must be reviewed. The galvanic series determines which metal corrodes first when two dissimilar metals are coupled in an electrolyte — the less noble (more anodic) metal corrodes preferentially, protecting the more noble cathode.
Corrosion management for pressure-containing equipment and safety-critical structures must follow applicable codes (API 570, ASME B31.3, DNV-RP-B401) and be reviewed by qualified corrosion engineers or materials engineers.
