Council Tax is a local property charge used to fund services such as rubbish collection, libraries, social care, fire services, and policing. This calculator estimates an annual and monthly amount from your authority's Band D charge and the national band multiplier. It is deliberately a planning tool: the Band D figure is editable because councils set different rates, and the amount on a real bill can include parish precepts, adult-social-care supplements, discounts, exemptions, or arrears that are not part of the simple band comparison.
Property bands are not personal income bands. They describe the assessed value of a dwelling at a historic valuation date. In England, most homes are assigned to bands A through H using their estimated 1 April 1991 value. Wales uses a later 1 April 2003 valuation basis and has bands A through I, while Scotland uses bands A through H and its own valuation and multiplier system. The result shown here is therefore best used to understand the relationship between bands, not to replace the bill from the relevant local authority.
Enter the Band D annual charge published by your council, then choose the property's band. For a D property the multiplier is 1.00. Band H is 2.00 times Band D, while Band A is 6/9 of Band D in the standard England-and-Wales comparison. The calculator divides the annual estimate by twelve to show a monthly equivalent; actual instalment schedules may use ten or twelve payments and can include adjustments.
When comparing rate ranges, compare like with like: the same financial year, the same nation, and the same definition of the charge. A headline Band D figure may be lower or higher than a neighbour's because councils fund different services, apply different adult-social-care decisions, or include a parish precept. It is sensible to budget a buffer around an estimate, especially after moving, because the bill can be corrected when a band, discount, occupancy status, or financial year is updated. Keep a copy of the bill and the council's published table alongside this calculation.

Annual estimate = local Band D charge × band multiplier
For the standard A–H scale the multipliers are A 6/9, B 7/9, C 8/9, D 9/9, E 11/9, F 13/9, G 15/9, and H 18/9. A £2,000 Band D charge therefore gives £1,333.33 for Band A and £4,000 for Band H before local additions or reductions.
Two properties in the same band can receive different bills if they are in different councils or parish areas. England, Wales, and Scotland also publish different valuation and rate-setting arrangements. A single-adult discount, student exemption, severe-mental-impairment disregard, empty-property rule, or local reduction can change the amount due; none should be inferred from the band alone.
If your estimate differs from a notice, compare the authority, band, financial year, and listed reductions first. A band challenge is handled by the valuation agency, not by this calculator. In England and Wales that usually means the Valuation Office Agency, while Scotland has separate assessor arrangements.
This is an educational estimate, not a Council Tax bill or valuation decision. Rules, valuation bases, discounts, exemptions, supplements, and annual charges differ across England, Wales, and Scotland and can change. Confirm the current position with the relevant council and valuation agency.
