Average journey speed is typically well below the posted speed limit due to acceleration and braking, traffic signals, junctions, and congestion. A 60 mph speed limit road averages 35–45 mph including all stops; a 70 mph motorway averages 55–65 mph off-peak and considerably less during morning and evening peak periods on busy corridors.

Travel time = Distance ÷ Average speed
Result in hours and minutes: hours = whole-number part; minutes = decimal fraction × 60
Worked example: 150 miles at 55 mph average speed. Travel time = 150 ÷ 55 = 2.727 hours = 2 hours 44 minutes. Departing at 08:30, estimated arrival = 11:14 before adding planned rest stops.
Multi-leg total: Sum each leg (distance ÷ speed) in hours and add stop durations separately. Convert the total hours to hours and minutes at the end.

Typical average journey speeds for planning purposes (including acceleration, braking, junctions, but excluding extended stops): urban/city centre 10–20 mph; suburban A-road 25–35 mph; mixed rural and A-road 35–45 mph; motorway off-peak 55–65 mph; motorway peak-hour on busy corridors (M25, M6 near Birmingham) 20–40 mph.
