A balance transfer calculator models moving one existing balance to a card with a promotional APR. It keeps the product boundary clear: a transfer has one balance, one promotional period, one upfront transfer fee, and a standard APR that can apply after the offer ends. It is not a snowball or avalanche calculator because there is no list of debts to order. the snowball calculator and the avalanche calculator are separate tools for several debts.
The important question is not only whether the introductory rate is 0%. You also need to know the fee charged when the balance is transferred, the number of months in the offer, the payment you can sustain, and the standard APR that applies to any balance left after the promotion. A low promotional rate can still be expensive if the fee is high or the remaining balance is exposed to a high standard rate.
Transfer fee: transferred balance × fee percentage ÷ 100.
During the promotional period, each month adds balance × promotional APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100, then subtracts the monthly payment. When the promotion ends, any remaining balance is carried into the standard-APR phase and the same month-by-month process continues.
Total cost: original transferred balance + transfer fee + modeled interest. The fee is displayed separately because it is charged upfront and is not interest.
The model caps the final payment at the amount owed. It also flags a payment that cannot exceed the interest accruing at the active APR instead of claiming that the balance will eventually disappear.
“Paid within promo window” means the simulated balance reaches zero before the promotional period ends. In that case, the standard APR does not enter the modeled payoff and the transfer fee is the main additional cost of the offer.
If a balance remains at the end of the promotion, the calculator shows that amount separately and adds the modeled interest under the standard APR. This is the scenario to examine carefully: a payment that looks comfortable during a 0% period may leave a large balance when the regular rate begins.
Real offers can have separate rates for purchases, different rules for late payments, minimum-payment formulas, daily interest accrual, and deadlines for completing a transfer. Use the result as a transparent comparison, then read the agreement and confirm the lender's terms.
Balance-transfer disclosures, fee rules, promotional-rate conditions, minimum-payment calculations, and consumer protections vary by jurisdiction and lender. This calculator is an educational estimate, not an offer, approval decision, financial recommendation, or guarantee of the terms you will receive. Read the full agreement and seek qualified debt advice if repayment is becoming difficult.
