Baking conversion formulas

Pan area ratio = (New pan area) ÷ (Original pan area)

Adjusted baking time = Original time × √(Area ratio)

Circular pan area = π × r² (where r = radius = diameter ÷ 2)

Rectangular pan area = Length × Width

Temperature conversions: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32; Gas Mark ≈ (°C − 121) ÷ 14 (approximate).

Worked example: Recipe for an 8-inch round pan at 350°F for 35 minutes. Baking in a 10-inch round pan instead. Area ratio = (5² × π) ÷ (4² × π) = 25 ÷ 16 = 1.5625. Adjusted time = 35 × √1.5625 = 35 × 1.25 = 44 minutes. Reduce temperature slightly to 325°F to prevent over-browning in the wider, shallower pan.
