BMI-based estimation (Deurenberg, 1991): BF% = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × age) − (10.8 × sex) − 5.4 (sex: 1 for male, 0 for female)

Worked example (US Navy, male): height 178 cm, waist 85 cm, neck 38 cm. BF% = 86.010 × log₁₀(47) − 70.041 × log₁₀(178) + 36.76 ≈ 17.0%.

Interpreting your body fat result

Healthy body fat % ranges

General body fat categories (widely cited in fitness and clinical literature): Men — essential fat 2–5%, athletes 6–13%, fitness 14–17%, acceptable 18–24%, high risk 25%+. Women — essential fat 10–13%, athletes 14–20%, fitness 21–24%, acceptable 25–31%, high risk 32%+. Body fat naturally increases with age — healthy ranges shift upward by approximately 1–2% per decade after age 30. Visceral fat (fat around internal organs) is metabolically more dangerous than subcutaneous fat and is not accurately measured by circumference methods. Waist circumference above 94 cm (men) or 80 cm (women) is a WHO risk threshold for metabolic disease, regardless of total body fat %.
