Key body composition formulas

BMR (Mifflin–St Jeor):

Men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5

Women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161

TDEE = BMR × activity multiplier (sedentary 1.2; lightly active 1.375; moderately active 1.55; very active 1.725; extra active 1.9)

Waist-to-height ratio = waist circumference ÷ height. Optimal value: < 0.5 for most adults; < 0.53 for people over 50.

Worked example: 35-year-old male, 80 kg, 178 cm → BMR = (10×80) + (6.25×178) − (5×35) + 5 = 800 + 1112.5 − 175 + 5 = 1,742 kcal/day. TDEE at moderate activity = 1,742 × 1.55 ≈ 2,700 kcal/day.
