Spirometry is the most important test in respiratory medicine — FEV1/FVC <0.70 post-bronchodilator is the GOLD definition of obstruction, and GOLD staging by FEV1% predicted guides treatment escalation in COPD. Peak flow measurement is the most accessible daily monitoring tool for asthma self-management, with percentage predicted providing the context that raw litre values lack.

  1. Choose a tab: Lung Function for spirometry interpretation, Hearing & Noise for occupational noise exposure, or Air Quality for pollution assessment.
  2. Lung Function: enter your age, height, sex, measured FEV1 and FVC (from your spirometry report), and peak flow. The tool calculates predicted values and shows FEV1/FVC ratio with GOLD staging and peak flow percentage predicted.
  3. Hearing & Noise: enter the A-weighted noise level (dB(A)), your daily hours of exposure at that level, and cumulative years of exposure. The tool shows NIOSH and OSHA safe exposure limits, your noise dose percentage, and an ISO 1999 estimate of hearing threshold shift.
  4. Air Quality: enter current PM2.5, NO₂, and O₃ readings from an air quality monitor or local authority data. The tool classifies PM2.5 by US EPA AQI and compares all three pollutants to WHO Air Quality Guidelines (2021).

Respiratory measurement formulas

Predicted FVC (Knudson simplified, men) = 0.0576 × H − 0.0269 × A − 4.34; women: 0.0443 × H − 0.0197 × A − 2.89 (H in cm, A in years). Predicted FEV1 (men): 0.0414 × H − 0.0244 × A − 2.19; women: 0.0342 × H − 0.0255 × A − 1.578.

GOLD COPD diagnosis requires FEV1/FVC <0.70 post-bronchodilator. GOLD staging by FEV1% predicted: GOLD 1 ≥80% (mild), GOLD 2 50–79% (moderate), GOLD 3 30–49% (severe), GOLD 4 <30% (very severe).

NIOSH safe daily noise dose: T = 8 ÷ 2^((dB − 85) ÷ 3) hours. OSHA: T = 8 ÷ 2^((dB − 90) ÷ 5) hours. Every 3 dB(A) increase halves NIOSH safe exposure time (NIOSH uses the 3 dB exchange rate; OSHA uses the more permissive 5 dB exchange rate). Noise dose % = (actual hours ÷ safe hours) × 100; >100% is overexposure.

Understanding your respiratory results

Peak flow percentage predicted interpretation

Peak flow ≥80% predicted: normal — no immediate action needed. 50–79% predicted: moderate reduction — review preventer inhaler technique and adherence; consider GP contact if symptomatic. <50% predicted: severe — follow your asthma action plan, and if symptoms are not improving with reliever inhaler, seek urgent medical assessment.

For hearing, NIOSH dose <100% means daily exposure is within safe limits. Dose 100–200% indicates elevated risk — double hearing protection (earplugs under earmuffs) should be considered. Dose >200% is high risk — engineering controls (quieter machinery, acoustic barriers) are required under UK COSHH and NIOSH guidelines; PPE alone is insufficient at very high doses.

Common mistakes to avoid

Spirometry interpretation uses Knudson reference equations and GOLD 2024 COPD guidelines. Peak flow predicted values use Nunn & Gregg reference tables. Noise exposure limits apply NIOSH (1998) and OSHA (29 CFR 1910.95) standards; UK occupational noise limits are set by the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 (80 dB(A) action level, 87 dB(A) limit value). Air quality classifications use US EPA AQI PM2.5 breakpoints and WHO Air Quality Guidelines (2021). This calculator is for educational and informational purposes only.
