An ovulation and fertile window calculator estimates the days each month when conception is most likely, based on the date of the last menstrual period (LMP) and the average cycle length. Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the next period — so for a 28-day cycle, ovulation falls around day 14; for a 32-day cycle, around day 18. The fertile window spans the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself, because sperm can survive in the fallopian tubes for up to 5 days. This calculator uses the standard LMP-based method, which is also the basis for clinical gestational age dating and the Naegele's rule due date calculation. Cycle length is the number of days from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. The calculation is most accurate for people with regular cycles between 21 and 35 days; irregular cycles reduce predictive accuracy significantly, and other methods such as basal body temperature (BBT) tracking or LH surge testing may be more reliable in those cases.

  1. Enter the date of the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) — this is day 1 of your cycle.
  2. Enter your average cycle length in days (default 28 — count from the first day of one period to the first day of the next).
  3. Read the estimated ovulation date, the fertile window start and end dates, and the predicted next period date.

  5. For best results when trying to conceive, time intercourse every 1–2 days during the fertile window, with the highest priority on the 2 days before and the day of ovulation.

The ovulation calculation formula explained

Ovulation day = LMP date + (cycle length − 14 days)

The luteal phase (ovulation to next period) is relatively constant at 14 days across most people, while the follicular phase (period to ovulation) varies. Subtracting 14 from the cycle length gives the length of the follicular phase — the number of days after LMP that ovulation occurs. The fertile window is then: ovulation day − 5 days to ovulation day. The next period is estimated as LMP + cycle length.

Worked example: LMP = 1 April, cycle length = 30 days. Ovulation = 1 April + (30 − 14) = 17 April. Fertile window = 12 April to 17 April. Next period = 1 May. Sperm viability window makes 12–17 April the highest-probability conception window.

How accurate is the ovulation estimate?

For people with regular 25–35 day cycles, this method predicts ovulation within ±2 days approximately 80% of the time (ACOG). The estimate becomes less reliable with cycle variability greater than 7 days between cycles, after recent hormonal contraceptive use, during breastfeeding, or with conditions such as PCOS that disrupt the follicular phase. For clinical accuracy, combine calendar tracking with LH surge urine tests (OPKs), which detect the hormonal surge 24–36 hours before ovulation.

The luteal phase shown (ovulation day to predicted next period) is typically 12–16 days. This calculator uses standard LMP-based ovulation estimation as described by ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) and NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). It is not a contraceptive method — it cannot reliably predict or prevent pregnancy. It is not a substitute for medical fertility assessment. If you have been trying to conceive for more than 12 months (or 6 months if over 35), consult a GP or fertility specialist.
