  5. For electrolytes: calculate sweat sodium concentration (typically 400–1,200 mg/litre) multiplied by sweat rate to estimate hourly sodium losses.

Baseline intake = Body weight (kg) × 33 ml/kg (general adult guideline; range 30–40 ml/kg depending on kidney function and climate)

Exercise adjustment = Sweat rate (ml/hr) × Exercise duration (hr)

Total daily target = Baseline + Exercise adjustment

Worked example: 70 kg adult, lightly active, moderate climate. Baseline = 70 × 33 = 2,310 ml. One hour of jogging at 800 ml/hr sweat rate → 2,310 + 800 = 3,110 ml total. Electrolyte check: at 600 mg sodium/litre, 800 ml of sweat contains 480 mg sodium — relevant for sessions over 90 minutes.

Sedentary adult in temperate climate: 2.0–2.5 litres/day from all sources (food contributes ~500–700 ml). Active adult training 1 hr/day: 2.8–3.5 litres/day. Athlete in heat training multiple sessions: 4–6+ litres/day. Electrolyte replacement becomes important above 60–90 minutes of continuous exercise — for shorter sessions, plain water is sufficient.
