Interpreting cricket statistics
Format benchmarks
Test batting average: 50+ is elite (only ~15 batters in history); 40+ is very good; below 30 is below average for a regular Test batter. ODI batting average: 45+ is elite; 30+ is solid. T20 batting strike rate: 130+ is competitive; 150+ is very strong. Bowling average: below 25 in Tests is elite; below 30 is very good. Economy rate in T20: below 7.5 is excellent; above 9.0 is expensive. The best all-rounders have batting averages and bowling averages within 10 of each other.
Sports tips and best practices
- Not-outs inflate batting averages — a batter with many not-out innings (tail-enders finishing with a partnership) will have an artificially high average.
- Compare statistics within the same era and format — pitches, rules, and equipment have changed significantly since the 1960s.
- Context matters: a 25-ball 40 chasing 200 in T20 is more valuable than a 30-ball 40 when chasing 120.
- Fantasy cricket leagues typically reward a combination of batting average and strike rate — look for batters who score consistently at a good rate rather than just high averages in slow innings.
- Don Bradman's Test batting average of 99.94 is the highest in history and is considered statistically the greatest sporting outlier — the next highest averages hover around 60.
- The average Test match produces approximately 350–400 runs per day across both teams, while a T20 can produce 350–400 runs in 40 overs total.
- A bowler taking 5 wickets in a Test innings (a "five-for") is considered one of the best individual performances — only Muttiah Muralitharan (67 five-fors) and Shane Warne (37) have taken more than 35 in Test history.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing raw stats across formats — a T20 batting average of 35 and a Test batting average of 35 represent very different levels of achievement.
- Ignoring sample size — a batter with 5 innings averaging 45 is statistically very uncertain; averages stabilise meaningfully after 20+ innings.
- Evaluating bowlers by economy alone in Tests — in red-ball cricket, taking wickets matters more than economy; the strike rate is often a better primary metric.
