Fractional to decimal: decimal = (numerator ÷ denominator) + 1 e.g. 5/2 → 2.5 + 1 = 3.5

Decimal to fractional: fractional = decimal − 1 e.g. 3.5 → 2.5 = 5/2

Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds × 100% e.g. 3.5 → 1/3.5 = 28.6%

Profit = Stake × (numerator ÷ denominator); Total return = Stake + Profit

Bookmaker margin = (sum of all implied probabilities − 1) × 100%

Handicap weight: horse rated 105 in a race with a ceiling of 100 carries 5lb overweight (ratings difference) on top of the weight-for-age scale. The standard flat weight-for-age scale peaks at 9st 10lb for a 4-year-old plus in summer.
