Advanced ice hockey statistics — particularly Corsi, Fenwick, and PDO — emerged from the hockey analytics community (known as "Corsi" metrics after Jim Corsi, a Buffalo Sabres goalie coach who first tracked shot attempts) and are now standard tools in NHL front offices. Corsi For % (CF%) measures the percentage of all shot attempts (on goal, missed, and blocked) taken by a player's team while that player is on the ice — it is one of the strongest predictors of future team success and a better measure of territorial control than plus/minus, which is heavily influenced by teammates and score effects. Fenwick For % (FF%) is similar but excludes blocked shots, which are partly influenced by defensive structure rather than shot quality. PDO (named after an anonymous blogger) combines save percentage and shooting percentage for a player's on-ice events; regression to mean suggests PDO values far above or below 1.00 are unsustainable and signal an over- or under-performing team.   1. For Corsi For %: enter shots for (Corsi For: all shot attempts by the team) and shots against (Corsi Against) while the player is on the ice at even strength; CF% = CF ÷ (CF + CA) × 100.
  2. For Fenwick For %: enter the same data excluding blocked shots; FF% = FF ÷ (FF + FA) × 100.
  3. For PDO: enter on-ice save percentage and on-ice shooting percentage; PDO = (on-ice SV% + on-ice SH%) × 100. League mean PDO ≈ 100.
  4. Filter all metrics to even-strength situations only (5v5) — power play and penalty kill situations introduce systematic biases that distort Corsi and Fenwick values.
  5. Compare results to the team and league averages; 50% CF% is perfectly average, above 55% is elite possession control.

Ice hockey advanced statistics formulas

Corsi For % (CF%) = Corsi For ÷ (Corsi For + Corsi Against) × 100

Corsi For = all shot attempts (goals, shots on goal, missed shots, blocked shots) taken by team while player is on ice. Corsi Against = all opposing shot attempts.

Fenwick For % (FF%) = Fenwick For ÷ (Fenwick For + Fenwick Against) × 100

Fenwick excludes blocked shots from both numerator and denominator.

PDO = (On-Ice Save % + On-Ice Shooting %) × 100

League PDO by definition averages 100.0 — teams or players with PDO far above 100 (101.5+) are typically performing above their "true" level and will regress; below 98.5 suggests under-performance relative to underlying play.

Example: 60 Corsi For, 50 Corsi Against while player is on ice → CF% = 60 ÷ (60+50) × 100 = 54.5%. Good territorial control.

Interpreting Corsi, Fenwick, and PDO

NHL benchmarks

CF% benchmarks at 5v5 (even strength): below 45% = poor possession; 45–50% = below average; 50–52% = average; 52–55% = good; 55%+ = elite. Elite teams (2019 Tampa Bay Lightning, 2017 Boston Bruins) sustain CF% of 54–56% over full seasons. Individual forward CF% benchmarks: bottom-pairing/fourth-line: ~46–48%; top-6 forward: ~50–52%; elite two-way player: 54%+. PDO regression: teams with first-month PDO above 102 revert toward 100 over an 82-game season with near-certainty — teams appearing to "overperform" or "underperform" early in the season often normalise. Fenwick vs Corsi: the two metrics correlate at ~0.95, so either serves as a reliable possession indicator.
