Rowing performance formulas
Power (watts) = 2.8 ÷ (split in seconds ÷ 500)³
This is the standard Concept2 formula: P = k ÷ t³ where k ≈ 2.8 and t is time per 500m in seconds.
Split (s/500m) = (2.8 ÷ Power)^(1/3) × 500
Drive Ratio = Drive Time ÷ Recovery Time (target: 0.40–0.45, i.e. drive = ~40–45% of stroke cycle)
Example: 2:00 split = 120 s/500m → P = 2.8 ÷ (120/500)³ = 2.8 ÷ 0.01382 = 202.6 watts. A 1:55 split → 115 s → P = 2.8 ÷ (115/500)³ = 2.8 ÷ 0.01221 = 229.4 watts. Significant: a 5-second split improvement represents a ~13% power increase.

2km erg benchmark splits (approximate, well-trained club rowers): lightweight women ~7:30–8:00; heavyweight women ~7:00–7:30; lightweight men ~6:30–7:00; heavyweight men ~6:00–6:30. - A 1-second improvement per 500m (e.g. 2:00 to 1:59) requires approximately 5–7% more power — improvements get harder as you approach your maximum aerobic capacity.
