A strength calculator estimates your one-rep max (1RM) — the maximum weight you can lift for a single repetition — from submaximal sets (e.g. 5 reps at 80%). Knowing your 1RM allows you to set precise percentage-based training loads for powerlifting, weightlifting, and strength training programmes. It also calculates your Wilks score (a bodyweight-adjusted strength comparison used in powerlifting) and training weight recommendations for each rep range.

One-rep max estimation formulas
Epley: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30) — most widely used, works for 1–12 reps
Brzycki: 1RM = weight × 36 / (37 − reps) — more accurate for low-rep sets (1–5)
Lombardi: 1RM = weight × reps^0.10 — conservative estimate

Training percentage guidelines
50–60% 1RM: 12–20 reps (endurance / warm-up). 60–70%: 10–15 reps (hypertrophy). 70–80%: 6–10 reps (hypertrophy/strength). 80–90%: 3–6 reps (strength). 90–100%: 1–3 reps (peaking). For beginners, estimated 1RMs are less accurate than for experienced lifters — never attempt a true 1RM until you have mastered technique. For competition purposes, always warm up to your opener with the barbell, not just calculated percentages.
Sports tips and best practices
- 1RM estimates are most accurate from sets of 3–5 reps taken to near-failure — accuracy decreases for sets of 8+ reps.
- Rest 3–5 minutes between heavy working sets to allow near-complete recovery of the phosphocreatine energy system.
- Progressive overload — adding 2.5–5 lbs per session for upper body, 5–10 lbs for lower body — is the most reliable way to increase 1RM over time.
- Competition powerlifting uses a 9-attempt structure (3 squat, 3 bench, 3 deadlift) — conservative openers (90–95% of best training lift) maximise total score.
- World record raw powerlifting total (men, 93 kg class) exceeds 1,000 kg (2,204 lbs) combined across squat, bench, and deadlift.
- An intermediate male lifter (1–3 years training) is expected to squat ~1.5× bodyweight, bench ~1.1× bodyweight, and deadlift ~2× bodyweight.
- Research shows 1RM formulas are accurate within ±5% for experienced lifters performing 2–5 rep sets, but accuracy drops significantly for sets above 8 reps.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Attempting a true 1RM without a spotter or safety equipment — always use safety bars, collars, and a qualified spotter for maximal attempts.
- Using a high-rep 1RM estimate (e.g. 20 reps) to set competition attempts — these estimates are far less reliable than low-rep tests.
- Training every session at max intensity — high-intensity sessions require 48–72 hours recovery; plan deload weeks every 4–8 weeks.
Strength training involves inherent risk of injury. Estimated 1RM values are mathematical approximations and should not substitute for proper technique and supervision. Consult a certified strength and conditioning coach, and your physician before beginning heavy resistance training.
