Packet Loss Calculator — calculate packet loss for tech projects. Formula, specs, and practical notes.
Transfer time (seconds) = File size (MB) × 8 ÷ Speed (Mbps)
Throughput (MB/s) = Speed (Mbps) ÷ 8
Real-world transfer time = Theoretical time ÷ efficiency factor (0.7–0.85)
Worked example: 1 GB file on 100 Mbps connection. File = 1,000 MB = 8,000 Mb. Time = 8,000 ÷ 100 = 80 seconds theoretical. At 80% efficiency: 80 ÷ 0.80 = 100 seconds actual.
Speed benchmarks: 3G ≈ 3 Mbps; ADSL broadband ≈ 10–20 Mbps; Fast Fibre ≈ 100 Mbps; Full Fibre (FTTP) ≈ 500–1,000 Mbps; 5G peak ≈ 1–10 Gbps.
