Total Leverage Calculator: calculate total leverage for your business. Formula, benchmarks, and practical tips included.
Startup metrics calculators quantify the financial health and growth efficiency of early-stage businesses. Unlike traditional accounting metrics, startup KPIs measure trajectory: how fast is the business growing, how efficiently is it converting revenue growth into cash, and how long will it survive at its current burn rate? Metrics like the Rule of 40, Magic Number, and Sales Efficiency Score are specifically designed for high-growth software and SaaS businesses where conventional profitability ratios mislead — a company losing money while growing 200% year-over-year may be in an excellent position; one with flat growth and thin margins may not.
EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortisation) measures operating profitability free from financing and accounting choices. Runway and burn rate are existential metrics — they tell founders exactly how many months of life remain at current spending. Operating leverage measures how a percentage increase in revenue translates to a disproportionately larger percentage increase in operating profit as fixed costs are spread over more revenue.
EBITDA = Net Income + Interest + Taxes + Depreciation + Amortisation
EBITDA Margin = EBITDA ÷ Revenue × 100
Runway (months) = Cash Balance ÷ Monthly Net Burn Rate
Rule of 40 Score = Revenue Growth Rate (%) + EBITDA Margin (%)
Magic Number = (Current Quarter ARR − Prior Quarter ARR) × 4 ÷ Prior Quarter S&M Spend
Operating Leverage = % Change in Operating Income ÷ % Change in Revenue
Sales Efficiency = New ARR ÷ Prior Period S&M Spend
Example: $2M ARR growing 80% YoY with −40% EBITDA margin → Rule of 40 = 80 + (−40) = 40. Exactly on the threshold — strong growth partially offsets poor unit economics.
Rule of 40: below 40 = concerning for Series B+; above 40 = efficient growth; above 60 = exceptional (Atlassian, Zoom at peak). Magic Number: below 0.5 = pause S&M spending and fix product/market fit; 0.5–0.75 = proceed cautiously; above 0.75 = invest aggressively in S&M. Runway: under 6 months = raise immediately; 12–18 months = healthy; 24+ months = strong position. EBITDA margin benchmarks vary by stage — early SaaS companies routinely run −40% to −80% EBITDA margins while investing in growth; mature SaaS targets 20–30%+. Operating leverage above 1.0 means revenue growth flows disproportionately to profit — a hallmark of scalable software businesses.
EBITDA is a non-GAAP financial measure; it is not defined under IFRS or US GAAP and can be calculated differently by different companies. Companies regulated by the SEC must reconcile non-GAAP measures to their nearest GAAP equivalent in public filings. For fundraising, M&A due diligence, or loan covenants, always use audited or reviewed financial statements and consult a qualified accountant or corporate finance adviser. Runway projections are forward-looking estimates subject to material uncertainty; actual cash depletion dates may differ significantly from modelled results.
