Worked example: Recipe calls for 2 cups of all-purpose flour. Density = 120 g per cup. Weight = 2 × 120 = 240 g. Reverse: 300 g of plain flour → 300 ÷ 120 = 2.5 cups. Note: density values assume the standard US cup (236.6 ml); UK/AU metric cup is 250 ml — adjust if your recipe uses metric cups.

Why densities differ between ingredients
Density differences between ingredients are large and practically significant. Flour (120 g/cup) is light because it traps air; butter (227 g/cup) is dense because it contains no air pockets. Brown sugar packed into a cup (220 g) weighs 83% more than the same volume of sifted icing sugar (120 g). Cocoa powder is especially variable — sifted cocoa can be as low as 75 g/cup, while unsifted pressed cocoa can reach 120 g/cup. The values in this calculator use the standard culinary reference values for lightly spooned (not packed or sifted) dry ingredients.
Food tips and best practices
- Always weigh flour rather than scoop it — scooping directly from the bag compresses the flour and adds 20–30% extra by weight, which throws off the flour-to-liquid ratio in baked goods.
- For butter, weight is almost always more reliable than volume — butter packaging in the UK and US typically includes gram and ounce markings on the wrapper.
