Recipe Scale Calculator

Scale ingredient quantities to a new serving count using fractions and metric or US units.

Scale three ingredient quantities to a new serving count. Enter decimals, simple fractions such as 1/2, or mixed fractions such as 1 1/2; select metric or US customary units.

The tool scales ingredient amounts proportionally. It does not adjust cooking time, pan size, temperature, or leavening chemistry.

  1. Enter the original and desired serving counts.
  2. Select metric or US customary units.
  3. Enter up to three ingredient amounts as decimals or fractions.
  4. Use the scaled quantities as a starting point and adjust baking technique separately.

Recipe scaling formula

Scaling factor = new servings ÷ original servings.

Scaled ingredient amount = original amount × scaling factor. Each amount stays in its selected unit. Metric and US quantities are not converted into one another by this calculator.

How to read the scaled quantities

A proportional starting point

The factor shows how much each entered amount changes. A result such as 2 1/4 cups means two cups plus one quarter cup. Weighing ingredients can improve repeatability when a recipe provides weights.

Food tips and best practices

Worked example: scale a recipe from 4 to 6 servings: factor = 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5. An ingredient listed as 1 1/2 cups becomes 1.5 × 1.5 = 2 1/4 cups. An ingredient listed as 200 g becomes 300 g.

Scaling quantities does not establish food safety, doneness, allergen suitability, or storage time. Follow the recipe’s safe cooking and handling directions and check the food itself with a suitable method.
