Advanced basketball statistics go beyond points, rebounds, and assists to measure a player's true contribution to team performance. Player Efficiency Rating (PER), developed by John Hollinger, reduces all box-score contributions to a single per-minute rate with a league average of 15.0. True Shooting Percentage (TS%) measures scoring efficiency accounting for 3-point shots and free throws, unlike traditional field goal percentage. Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%) adjusts for the extra value of 3-pointers but excludes free throws. Box Plus/Minus (BPM) estimates a player's points contribution per 100 possessions relative to average, context-adjusted for teammates. Win Shares (WS) estimates the number of wins a player contributed to their team across a season.

These metrics are used by NBA front offices, fantasy sports analysts, and coaching staff to evaluate trades, draft prospects, and lineup decisions. Modern teams combine these box-score-based stats with tracking data (Second Spectrum, SportVU) measuring on/off impact, defensive positioning, and hustle metrics not captured in traditional statistics.   1. For PER: enter points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, missed shots, and minutes played; the calculator applies the Hollinger formula and normalises to a league average of 15.
  2. For TS%: enter total points scored, field goal attempts, and free throw attempts; formula is Points ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)).
  3. For eFG%: enter field goals made, 3-pointers made, and field goal attempts; formula is (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA.
  4. For Win Shares: this is a more complex calculation requiring team context — enter player's offensive and defensive rating contributions relative to team replacements.
  5. Compare results to positional averages, as guards and centres differ significantly across all metrics due to role differences.

True Shooting % = Points ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA))

Effective FG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA

PER (simplified) = (Points + Reb + Ast + Stl + Blk − TO − Missed FG − Missed FT) ÷ Minutes × pace_adjustment

BPM = coefficient model using box-score stats per 100 possessions − league average (0.0)

Example TS%: 30 points on 20 FGA and 8 FTA → TS% = 30 ÷ (2 × (20 + 0.44 × 8)) = 30 ÷ (2 × 23.52) = 30 ÷ 47.04 = 63.8%. League average TS% in the NBA is approximately 57–58%.

Interpreting advanced basketball stats

NBA player benchmarks

PER benchmarks: below 10 = fringe roster player; 11–14 = bench contributor; 15 = average starter; 17–20 = quality starter; 20–25 = All-Star level; 25–30 = MVP candidate; 30+ = all-time great season (Wilt Chamberlain's 1963 season: PER 31.8). TS% benchmarks: below 50% = poor efficiency; 55–58% = average; above 60% = excellent; above 65% = elite (Rudy Gobert, players who score at the rim). eFG% league average is around 53–54%. BPM: 0 = average; +2 = good starter; +4 = All-Star; +6 = MVP; Michael Jordan's career BPM of +9.2 is the highest in NBA history. Win Shares: 5–8 WS in a season = good starter; 10–14 WS = All-Star; 15+ WS = MVP-level.
